The World Environment Day
Today is World Environment Day (WED) which is celebrated every year on the 5th of June. It is the United Nations prime vehicle for encouraging awareness and action to protect our environment. WED has become a global platform for public outreach, with more than 143 countries participating annually, sensitizing everyone about the growing environmental conditions and suggesting ways to prevent them.
The theme for this year is “Celebrate Biodiversity”, and it will be hosted in Colombia, in partnership with Germany. The theme is extremely relevant because human beings are part of the ecosystem and cannot continue to survive in isolation. Biodiversity is important for the survival of all living things big and small, on land, or in water. We need to understand that while there may be a food chain and ranking of species, every living thing is connected to another living thing, and together it forms a network of diverse life forms on the planet.
Biodiversity is very important to an ecosystem because each species plays a different role in the maintenance of the ecosystem.
Everyone of us is called to act responsibly in protecting the environment.
Following is a list of what we can do to keep the environment safe for us all:
Volunteer to clean your neighborhood
Save paper by using emails and other means of communication
Decide to eat less processed food
Commit to using reusable shopping bags; recycle waste wood, paper, electronic bags devices and a host other materials can be recycled rather than tossing them into the trash
Avoid waste of water
When you can take a walk; avoid driving
Teach children that all living things are connected in the web of life and how we can act for nature
Talk to neighbors on the importance of conserving resources such as water, fuel, soil, and vegetation
Start a small garden of edible items
Replace your light bulbs with energy-saving ones
Switch off appliances when they are not in use
